Transportation Action: Save Bike Lanes in Vancouver!

I just sent this out to our Vancouver list.  If you live in Vancouver please take action!

Act Now to Save Bike Lanes on MacArthur Boulevard!
MacArthur Boulevard is a major route for bike riders in Vancouver.  With low traffic and the main access street to Vancouver’s eastern neighborhoods it is an important connection for bicycles.

Last year the City of Vancouver developed a plan that they took out to the public to retrofit MacArthur Boulevard.  With low traffic levels and unsafe cycling conditions due to large stormwater drains, the plan was to focus car travel to one lane each way and install a new bicycle lane that will allow riders to travel safely around the stormwater drains.

Despite broad public outreach and local business support to install safe bike lanes on MacArthur Boulevard, the City Public Works department is now turning their backs on this project.

The citizens of Vancouver deserve streets that are safe for pedestrians, drivers, transit riders, and cyclists.  Please CLICK HERE to send a message to the mayor, city manager, and public works director to let them know you want safer streets for everyone and want to see the planned bike lanes on MacArthur Boulevard.
Thanks for your support of safer streets for everyone,

Andrew Austin
Field Director
Transportation Choices Coalition

P.S-Taking action is easy, all you have to do is CLICK HERE to and in less than a minute you can take action to keep our streets safer in Vancouver.

This Thursday: Capitol-ize on a United Front for Transportation!

TRANSPORTATION ADVOCACY DAY: Sign in, show up and support more transportation choices!

Join Transportation Choices Coalition and other progressive transportation and environmental organizations such as the Cascade Bicycle Club, Bicycle Alliance of Washington, Sierra Club, Futurewise, Feet First, WashPIRG, All Aboard Washington, Uptown Alliance, and Washington Coalition for Promoting Physical Activity as we head to Olympia to fight for more transportation choices. With a short session and the state's budget crisis worsening, expect the 2010 legislative session to be fast-paced and focused on filling the $2.6 billion and growing hole in the state's operating budget. We'll be lobbying our elected officials to save transit service in communities around the state; for healthy and safe walkable and bikeable communities; and for incentives that encourage driving less.

*** Our top 3 legislative priorities -- "Transit Funding to Keep Washington Moving" (HB 2855), "Complete Our Streets" (HB 2911) and "Increased Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety" (HB 3001) -- will have a public hearing during Transportation Advocacy Day. ***

WHEN: Thursday, January 28, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

WHERE: United Churches, 110 11th Avenue SE., Olympia 98501

Cascade Bike Club and Tacoma Wheelman host a Tacoma Bike In Tomorrow!

What can you do to improve bicycling in Tacoma, Pierce County and throughout Washington? Join Cascade Bicycle Club, the Tacoma Wheelmen and Tacoma stakeholders this Saturday, Oct. 17 for a workshop on bike advocacy and a bike ride, with drinks to follow.
Schedule:
10am - 1pm: Workshop and lunch at the Tacoma Downtown Library, 1102 Tacoma Avenue South

1pm - 3pm: Bike tour of Tacoma with bicycle planners and special guests, including City Councilmember Lauren Walker

3pm - eve.: Meet at the Harmon HUB for drinks with Councilmember Jake Fey

Email Chris.Rule@cascadebicycleclub.org to RSVP!

We'd like to make sure there are enough snacks and coffee for everyone. It's a busy weekend, so feel free to stop in for only part of the day! Please let us know if you will be joining us for the workshop, ride, and/or at the HUB.

We'll discuss how we can use our clout to demand better facilities and just laws for bicyclists.

Also, the outcome of the bicycle and pedestrian count, and how the data we collect on bicycling is crucial to our safety as bicyclists.
Together, we'll strategize on making a difference in Tacoma and working together for better state laws and funding sources for lanes and trails.
